TEACHER

Theoretical Perspective

I will be a facilitator in the classroom rather than

a passive teacher. I’ve experienced both versions as

student and strongly favoured the constructivist based approach. I will use the theory of social constructivism in my career as a teacher - as outlined in my academic poster (right). This will be especially useful in the practical side of visual art, where the scaffolding method will be vital in supporting learner's needs. New skills will need to be modelled, discussed and reflected upon, before students can go on using and improving each new technique - both in school and as self regulated learners moving forward.

“It’s about how you prepare, you get something worth asking to start a discussion. The purpose of the question is to start a discussion. It’s not about the right answer.”

(Focus on Learning Effective Questioning. (n.d.). [online] Available at: https://ncca.ie/media/1924/assessment-booklet-2_en.pdf.)

Art is about opinions, so collaborative classroom discussions will play a vital role. I want to create environments in which students can actively learn for themselves through realistic tasks, where I can provide feedback as necessary. If students are actively engaged in lessons with each other, they will understand more, collectively build knowledge and remember it for future use.

I will use multiple modes of learning, such as visual and auditory aids, text based information, and effective differentiation strategies, so that everyone has an equal opportunity to get to the same level of learning and achievement.
